UniThis UniThat, what now?

Sunday, December 24th, 2006

How about UniController. For days me an iapain have been sending emails back and forth at each other and one of the things we have been talking about is a new feature that will allow users to start and stop the server easily without the use of the infamous .bat files.

This idea started with the forum post by markettwp, when he could not start his server with the .bat files since he was running under restriction, after this, i appointed iapain the task to work on an executive that will allow users to startand stop the server without having to always use the batch files.

He was done with a executive that fixes the problem about 2-4 days ago, but my only problem with it was that it is command line and have to be ran with command prompt which can get real hectic when it comes to support because of some users, so i proposed to him a GUI version (you can take a look at the quick design sketch i made for him) that will allow users to start the server and stop it with one easy executive.

UniController Beta
(Please note that the actual software might not look like the design)

The executive can also be used to start and stop plugins that need these controls such as the UniTray, Java & etc. Currently, as i just proposed the idea to him we are still discussing it and i will let you know how things turn up.

Whats Going On?

Tuesday, December 19th, 2006

Well iapain is done with a full NSIS installer for the server, but it is not going to be used as the main distribute. Why? Registry writing, that should say it all. For now we still have 2 to 3 major things to do and then we will be packing it up.

For a few days, the links here were gone due to the deletion of an account; they are back now with UniCenter and some other links added to it. You can also find the links on the global bar of the forum.

For now, i am working on updating the perl libraries and if you have a program that can check a folder for files in another folder and replaces it with the new one, please let me know. Also to add, if you are a user of the Uniform Server and you are not a member of the forum, please join to share your thoughts and opinions with us.

The Sluger, not slacking.

Monday, December 18th, 2006

Today we have reached a good point in the development of The Sluger. Tons of fixes has been made, things have been patched and some things are still being worked on or updated. Hopefully with the way things are going, we should have a release early next year if not on New Years day.

You can check the cut down of our reported bugs: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=53691&atid=471253

The Next Chapter

Wednesday, December 13th, 2006

A lot of people probably have it in their heads or think that the Uniform Server has died or the development has stopped. Thats False! :P The development of the server was just put on hold for a while due to some real life issues and things that are going on. After a year of life battling, i think its time we make another great comeback, but we gotta set our stage ready.

Web Development
Our main site uniformserver.com might be getting a facelit. Hopeful if there is time or if someone propose a good design, we might be making the change. This might be around spring-summer of 07. We will be updating all the softwares we use on the website that are outdated also, we might have missed 1-2 version updates, but they are still good, running and secure. The Center will be getting more attention from the forums and we will be launching another campaign to spread word of the server around to everyone (after the release of 4.0), from the open-source community to local students.

Beta Center: The development of the Beta Center might continue after the release of 4.0 and its plugins, but we are not yet certain. It will feature full integration with the current member database (forum database), and will be the round-table for beta testers, graphic gurus, translators, and the developers to meet, share ideas, work together, and also download/review beta releases. ;)
Server Development
During the year there has been some minor development on the project and some things have been fixed and look at and thats why we are going to be releasing a minor update before the next version. This minor update will include updates to the softwares and applications, bug fixes, and some patches. This update will be called The Sluger.

Naming: We are also introducting a new style that will be used during the development and release of the server. We are no longer going to be calling the server by version, but by a name. Each version will be named and will also come with its version number, but the name will be used more to make the server more distinguished.

I posted into the forum a while ago about this topic [LINK] and i am trying to get more users to reply so we can have a feel and voice from the community. Though i already leaked that the next main version will be 4.0, there is still some surprises boxed in for you all. The Sluger might be released in time for Christmas or New Year, but version 4.0 might not be released till spring of ‘07.

Plugin Development
Most people were surprised when i said in the forum post that we had about 20 plugins ready made for the server, but thats true. Most where not released because of no installer, and as we have seen in recent plugin release, the use of the DOC Manual Installation could be hectic and cause problems for some users, so we are going to be working on making installers for them after 4.0 is complete because there might be some framework changes and structural changes.

Server Compatability: Some of the plugins that will be released might be compatible with old versions of the server with some changes made to the structure, and some might not.

Patchable: The idea for 4.0 is that it should be very mobile and patchable, meaning you can install plugins as you want. Unlike most WAMP servers that come with everything preinstalled, you downloading the plugin you want in order to do your work is not a bad thing.

U3 Deployable: A new thing we are also going to be doing is making the server U3 Deployable. U3 is a new technology that comes on most of today’s Smart Drives. Check out their website for more information.

With most of this said, we will be updating you about any other thing that comes to mind. We are also looking for talented and dedicated developers, so if you are intrested in joining the team, please send us an email with some information about your work and what you have done. :)
